It’s a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s independence. The day actually marks Mexico’s unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Today, for many people, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture. For others, it’s another reason to party.

Whatever your reason for celebrating Cinco de Mayo, we’ve rounded up some beautiful inspiration for throwing a fabulous fiesta.

How cute are these invitations? The simple crepe paper makes them so festive. What a fun idea!

This outdoor scene is pretty much perfect! There’s so much to love: the colorful paper poofs, green and white striped table runner, and (our favorite) the chairs. Just add our closest friends, cold margaritas, and 75 degrees, and we’re all set!

We love the idea of bold black and white stripes with pops of bright colors (fuchsia, marigold, turquoise, and lime). How beautiful are these flowers in eclectic vases and the hand-painted maracas?

You know what they say: Mi casa es su casa. Literally let your amigos know with this cute table and welcome mat.

¡A comer! On the menu: mini Mexican-inspired appetizers, like these nacho bitesguacamole bruschetta, and individual layered dip cups.

Drinks & Dulces:

What’s missing so far? Ah yes, margaritas. A Cinco de Mayo must-have. Let’s go a little bit loco with mason jar margaritasmargarita shots in limesmargarita popsicles, and margarita cupcakes.

Por Favor – Party Favors:

Give guests something simple and useful: a small cactus wrapped in colorful tissue paper and a ribbon. The Besos (“kisses”) tags add a sweet, sincere touch. See our party favor tips for more ideas.

Nothing sets the mood of a party like music. If you can, hire a mariachi band. Or, at the very least, create a Cinco de Mayo playlist with mariachi music.

Who doesn’t love piñatas (except for maybe those unfortunate few who have suffered piñata-induced injuries)? These colorful, modern DIY piñatas are almost too beautiful to bash. Almost.

What to Wear:

Head to your local vintage shop (or Etsy!) to search for the perfect embroidered floral dress. We love this one, and her whole hippie-ish vibe.
