Last week I attended the Sufjan Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long show (formally known as the “Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long: Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice”). It was a cheerful, tacky songfest with inflatable santas, kitschy Christmas decor, and tinsel galore. I loved it.
At one point, dressed as a unicorn and from atop a giant speaker, Sufjan performed a song called “Christmas Unicorn” from his latest Christmastide-y collection. It was at that moment when I thought “Hark! This would make a weird, yet awesome theme party!” And so, away in a manger (Aladdin Theater) on a silent night (your average Wednesday), the Christmas Unicorn theme party was born.
What goes hand-in-hoof with unicorns? Rainbows, of course!
You definitely wouldn’t want your guests to feel left out – sparkly unicorn horn party hats for everyone!
Now that everyone has unicorn horns, show them off in front of this DIY tinsel photobooth backdrop.
Legend goes that unicorns have a real sweet tooth. Cupcakes, cookies, and unicorn lollipops ought to hit the spot.

Behind Sufjan and his costume-clad bandmates, was the “Wheel of Christmas” – a giant spinning wheel that helped select carols for the audience to sing together (see the first picture in this post). Turn your Christmas Unicorn party into a sing-a-long with your very own Wheel of Christmas!

Are you the Christmas Unicorn?
P.S. I realize this theme party makes little sense to someone unfamiliar with Sufjan Stevens or the Christmas Unicorn song, but hopefully you can appreciate tacky/fun/glittery holiday awesomeness regardless!
