Theme Party Inspiration: Christmas Unicorn

The Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long: Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice

The Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long: Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice

Last week I attended the Sufjan Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long show (formally known as the “Surfjohn Stevens Christmas Sing-A-Long: Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant on Ice”). It was a cheerful, tacky songfest with inflatable santas, kitschy Christmas decor, and tinsel galore. I loved it.

At one point, dressed as a unicorn and from atop a giant speaker, Sufjan performed a song called “Christmas Unicorn” from his latest Christmastide-y collection. It was at that moment when I thought “Hark! This would make a weird, yet awesome theme party!” And so, away in a manger (Aladdin Theater) on a silent night (your average Wednesday), the Christmas Unicorn theme party was born.

What goes hand-in-hoof with unicorns? Rainbows, of course!

It’s pretty obvious that you (and/or your cat) would need to dress like a unicorn.

You definitely wouldn’t want your guests to feel left out – sparkly unicorn horn party hats for everyone!

Legend goes that unicorns have a real sweet tooth. Cupcakescookies, and unicorn lollipops ought to hit the spot.

Behind Sufjan and his costume-clad bandmates, was the “Wheel of Christmas” – a giant spinning wheel that helped select carols for the audience to sing together (see the first picture in this post). Turn your Christmas Unicorn party into a sing-a-long with your very own Wheel of Christmas!

You can see more inspiration for a Christmas Unicorn Theme Party on ourChristmas Unicorn Pinterest board.

Are you the Christmas Unicorn?

P.S. I realize this theme party makes little sense to someone unfamiliar with Sufjan Stevens or the Christmas Unicorn song, but hopefully you can appreciate tacky/fun/glittery holiday awesomeness regardless!

Theme Party Inspiration: A Christmas Story

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, which means it’s time to get into the holiday spirit! I’ve got myself a little decorating party going on: Sufjan Stevens, bourbon apple cider, and my favorite holiday movie – A Christmas Story!

(Confession: I am also listening to Amy Grant. I can’t help it.)

Part of my holiday decor includes a miniature A Christmas Story leg lamp (which belongs in the front window, of course). The “soft glow of electric sex” got me thinking about a theme party based off of the movie. Wouldn’t that be fun?

“Fra-gee-lay… must be Italian.”

“Fra-gee-lay… must be Italian.”

I’m imagining a kitschy and vintage party with ugly sweaters, deranged Easter bunny suits, and retro children’s toys underneath a traditional tinsel-covered tree. Christmas songs would blare from the record player, and A Christmas Story the movie would play on repeat.

“Oh boy! A Zeppelin!” Theme party decor inspiration: children’s vintage toys under a traditional tree.

With the theme in mind, the menu would include meatloaf (“meatloaf, smeatloaf, double-beatloaf…I hate meatloaf!“), turkey (eat it before the Bumpases’ dogs get to it!), duck (Fa-Ra-Ra-Ra-Ra!), and Ovaltine (“A crummy commercial?”). For dessert? Ohh… Fudge!  You would probably want to serve other, more delicious appetizers and drinks, too. Meatloaf isn’t for everyone… or most, for that matter!

“… but I didn’t say fudge.”

If you want to include activities at your A Christmas Story party, you could have meatloaf-eating contests (guests would have to eat it “like the piggies do” – no hands, no utensils) and toy rifle target practice in the backyard (don’t shoot your eye out!). You could also double-dog dare a party guest to stick their tongue to a flagpole, but that would be kind of mean/epic. Foul-mouthed guests would definitely be forced to eat soap.

“It was… soap poisoning!”

Now I’m even more excited for Christmas!

Theme Party Inspiration: Christmas in July

I got a sunburn on Christmas day last year. Instead of sipping hot cocoa next to a glowing fire, I played outside in the crisp kiwi sunshine. At first it felt so weird, and I missed the coziness of Christmas in Oregon. But by the end of our vacation, I felt pretty at home drinking white wine in the sun.

I loved our sunny Southern hemisphere Christmas so much, I’d like to do it all over again. And since plane tickets to New Zealand aren’t exactly cheap, I’ll have to do the next best thing: pretend it’s Christmas this summer in Oregon!

Everyone should experience what it’s like to sing Christmas carols in tank tops and flip-flops (a.k.a. jandals), so I created two “Christmas in July” theme party boards (one traditional theme and one trendy theme) to help you out.

For a traditional Christmas in July party, imagine a vintage picnic on the beach with red and white gingham, fresh berries, frozen hot chocolate, snowmen made of sand, and snowballs made of water balloons.

For a trendy Christmas in July party, imagine a neon green and neon pink pool party with cocktails, glow sticks, 80s Christmas songs, an island-style BBQ, and obligatory hipster mustache straws.
